The Battle

History & Significance

Following the flight of the Earl of Northumberland after the Northern Rising's collapse, the Percy estates including Alnwick Castle were seized by the crown and garrisoned with royal troops. The confiscation of the Percy inheritance, the greatest magnate holding in the north of England, represented a fundamental shift in northern power structures. Elizabeth I was determined that no single magnate family should again command the resources to mount a rebellion of 1569's scale. The garrison of Alnwick under crown control was a visible symbol of this new policy.
