The Battle

History & Significance

The third and final siege of Newark from November 1645 was conducted jointly by Parliamentary and Scottish Covenanting forces. The Scots under David Leslie invested the north side while Parliamentary forces blocked the south. The garrison under Lord Belasyse conducted determined sorties but was gradually starved. Charles I personally ordered the surrender in May 1646 after his capture by the Scots at Southwell.
