History & Significance

Colonel John Boys had defended Donnington Castle through repeated Parliamentary sieges since 1644, surviving bombardment that destroyed much of the castle. Charles I relieved it after Second Newbury. Boys finally surrendered in April 1646 on the King's direct orders, like Newark. He was subsequently knighted for his defence.
