History & Significance

As Dundee gathered the clans in the central and western Highlands in the spring of 1689, government forces attempted to probe the mountain passes and monitor Jacobite movements. Skirmishing occurred around the passes of the Great Glen and the Garry valley before the main campaign. These actions helped Dundee maintain the initiative in the weeks before Killiecrankie.
