History & Significance

Calshot Castle, built on a shingle spit commanding the mouth of Southampton Water, was garrisoned in 1539 to prevent any enemy fleet from reaching Southampton or the anchorage behind the Isle of Wight. Together with Hurst Castle opposite on the western Solent, it formed the first layer of defence for England most important southern anchorage.
