The Battle

History & Significance

The final action at Stow-on-the-Wold on 21 March 1646 saw Lord Astley leading the last Royalist field force in England attempting to march from the Welsh Marches to Oxford. Parliamentary forces under Colonel Morgan intercepted and defeated the force in the Stow marketplace. Astley famously told his captors they might go and play for he had done his work.
