History & Significance

James Renwick, the last Covenanting field preacher to be executed, conducted armed conventicles in the hills of Dumfriesshire and Galloway until his capture in Edinburgh in January 1688. Government forces hunted him persistently. His last conventicle operations in the remote borderland hills were guarded by armed men. Renwick was captured, tried and executed in February 1688, the last Covenanting martyr before the Revolution.
