History & Significance

After the forfeiture of the Lordship of the Isles in 1493, MacDonald claimants repeatedly attempted to restore their power in Lochaber and the western Highlands. James IV sent forces to suppress these risings. The engagements around Corpach near the head of Loch Linnhe — close to the site of the old MacDonald stronghold at Inverlochy — were part of this pattern of intermittent royal intervention in the western Highlands throughout the 1490s.
