History & Significance

Parliamentary forces under Lambert reoccupied Chester in August 1659 after Booth's defeat at Winnington Bridge ended the northern rising. Booth himself attempted to escape disguised as a woman but was captured. The peaceful reoccupation of Chester completed the suppression of the last major Royalist armed attempt before the Restoration.
