The Battle

History & Significance

When Egbert invaded Mercia in 829 and drove out Wiglaf, Wiglaf fled and organised resistance. He had recovered the kingdom by 830, probably through negotiation and possibly through Northumbrian non-cooperation with Egbert. Wiglaf's rapid restoration showed the resilience of Mercian identity even at the nadir of Mercian power.
