The Battle

History & Significance

Derventio (Malton) guarded the crossing of the River Derwent on the road north from Eboracum. Auxiliary units — including Numerus Supervenientium Petuariensium attested on an inscription — were stationed there. The fort commanded the route into the Vale of Pickering and the eastern approaches to the Yorkshire uplands. Destruction layers in the archaeology confirm violent episodes, possibly during the Barbarian Conspiracy of 367.
