Offa tightened Mercian control over East Anglia in the early 790s. The execution of Aethelberht of East Anglia in 794 was the culmination of this subjugation. East Anglian kings who had operated under Mercian overlordship were now removed or killed, with East Anglia treated as a Mercian possession.
