Alfred garrisoned the exceptionally well-preserved Roman Saxon Shore fort at Portchester as part of his coastal defence network. Portchester commanded the entrance to Portsmouth harbour and was one of the few Roman forts whose walls were still largely intact. Its conversion to an Anglo-Saxon burh required minimal construction but maximum strategic benefit, guarding against Danish fleet incursions into the Solent.
