History & Significance

The killing of Cynewulf at Merton by Cyneheard is told at length in the Anglo-Saxon Chronicle as a meditation on loyalty. Cynewulf was caught alone with a woman; his retinue refused to accept a truce and all died with him. Cyneheard was then killed by the main Northumbrian force. The story became a canonical example of Anglo-Saxon warrior ethics.
