The Battle

History & Significance

Bigod divided his forces between Hull and Scarborough, weakening both attacks. Scarborough Castle's position on its sea-cliff made it essentially impregnable without artillery. The garrison's successful resistance ended any hope of the second rising establishing a northern stronghold. Henry VIII moved quickly — Bigod was caught fleeing toward the Scottish border and executed. The Carlisle rebels who rose simultaneously were also suppressed and their leaders executed.
