History & Significance

Quintus Petillius Cerialis established the legionary fortress at Eboracum (York) as the operational base for the conquest of Brigantia. The site at the confluence of the Ouse and Foss commanded the Vale of York and became the permanent northern capital of Roman Britain. York would remain the preeminent city of northern England for the next millennium.
