History & Significance

Barlings Abbey was central to the Lincolnshire rising. Abbot Mackerel was one of the few clerics to take an active military role. After the rebellion he was attainted for treason and hanged. Barlings itself was dissolved in 1537 as a direct consequence of its involvement in the rising.
