History & Significance

Henry Clifford, Earl of Cumberland, held Skipton Castle for the Crown while the surrounding Craven countryside rose for the Pilgrimage. The muster of Craven rebels was one of the largest in the West Riding. Clifford was effectively besieged and isolated; his castle held but he could not prevent the region contributing thousands to the Pilgrim host. The episode showed how isolated Crown loyalists in Yorkshire were at the rebellion's height.
