The East Anglian beacon chain and militia muster of 1588 guarded the long open coastline of Suffolk and Norfolk, which presented the most accessible landing beaches on the east coast. A Spanish army landed here could have marched on London with relatively little obstacle. The muster at Suffolk and Norfolk was part of the comprehensive mobilisation of all English coastal counties during the crisis.
