History & Significance

The government fort at Inverlochy (the future Fort William) was a key strategic point in the western Highlands. In 1689 the garrison faced repeated pressure from Jacobite clans — particularly the Camerons of Lochiel, whose lands surrounded it. The fort commanded the head of Loch Linnhe and the entrance to the Great Glen. Its garrison, though small, denied the Jacobites an important base and tied down Cameron clan forces that might otherwise have reinforced Cannon's army after Killiecrankie.
