The Battle

History & Significance

Malcolm III launched his first invasion of England in 1061, taking advantage of the absence of Earl Siward's successor and the general instability of Northumbria. His forces raided as far as Lindisfarne and deep into the Tyne valley. The raid secured plunder and established Malcolm's martial credentials as the new King of Scots. This was the first of five invasions he would lead into England, beginning a pattern of Scottish pressure on the northern border that would persist for decades.
