History & Significance

The Anglo-Saxon Chronicle records Aelle and Cissa besieging and taking the Roman fort of Anderitum (Pevensey), slaying all its inhabitants. One of the most explicit early records of massacre in the conquest period, it marks the effective end of organised British resistance in Sussex.
