The Battle

History & Significance

Bodmin was the principal Cornish muster point for the Western Rising. Humphrey Arundell, a soldier veteran, provided military leadership to the Cornish contingent. The Bodmin muster transformed the Devon parish-level revolt into a cross-county host capable of besieging a major city. The Cornish grievances included the Prayer Book (why should we be bound to a Christmas game) and the threat to church plate and chantries.
