History & Significance

Ida of Bernicia, founding king of the Northumbrian line, conducted campaigns along the Northumbrian coast from his fortress at Bamburgh. The Welsh poem Taliesin mentions wars against the men of the north in this period. Ida's expansion from Bamburgh into the Bernician hinterland displaced British kingdoms that had survived the initial Anglian settlement.
