The Earls of Sutherland and the Sinclairs of Caithness engaged in one of Scotland most protracted clan feuds, lasting from the fourteenth through the seventeenth centuries. Disputes over land, cattle, and precedence produced periodic violence along the Sutherland-Caithness border. The Aultnamain engagement was part of this pattern. The feud eventually required royal arbitration on multiple occasions.
