History & Significance

The Cumberland and Westmorland rising of October 1536 was significantly shaped by local leaders including Robert Pulleyn and others associated with the Atkinson surname network in the dales. The Westmorland muster drew men from the Eden Valley and the western dales to join the Pilgrimage. The Westmorland contingent was among the most consistently committed elements of the northern rising and the most difficult to pacify afterward.
