History & Significance

The Anglo-Saxon Chronicle records a remarkable episode: Vikings who had been expelled from Brittany crossed the Bristol Channel and raided Archenfield in Herefordshire, capturing Bishop Cyfeiliog of Archenfield. The Mercians gathered forces from Hereford, Gloucester, and nearby burhs and harried the raiders, forcing them to give hostages and promise to leave English territory. This shows that even as Aethelflaed was pushing east against the Danelaw, her western frontier required active defence.
