Parliamentary forces assaulted the North Gate of Colchester during the 1648 siege in an attempt to force a rapid conclusion before the siege dragged on through summer. The Royalist garrison under Lucas repulsed the assault with heavy Parliamentary casualties. The failure of the direct assault confirmed Fairfax would have to starve the garrison out.
