History & Significance

The Kentish kingdom under Æthelberht II was progressively brought under Mercian control through the 760s and 770s. Offa intervened in Kentish politics, annulled Kentish charters, and eventually controlled Kent as a subject kingdom. The loss of Kentish independence was one of the key steps in Mercian supremacy.
