The Kentish kingdom under Æthelberht II was progressively brought under Mercian control through the 760s and 770s. Offa intervened in Kentish politics, annulled Kentish charters, and eventually controlled Kent as a subject kingdom. The loss of Kentish independence was one of the key steps in Mercian supremacy.
