Æthelred of Mercia ravaged Kent in 676, sacking Rochester and causing widespread destruction including damage to churches. The campaign forced Kent into a subordinate position under Mercia. Theodore of Tarsus was deeply angered by the ecclesiastical damage and the episode caused a lasting breach between Mercia and Canterbury.
