History & Significance

Rhys ap Gruffudd, grandson of Rhys ap Thomas, rose against the Tudor government in 1529 in what proved to be the last armed rising of a Welsh magnate. Rhys resented the appointment of Walter Devereux as steward of Brecon over his head. He was accused of plotting with James V of Scotland and was arrested, tried for treason, and executed in 1531. The crushing of this minor Welsh rising demonstrated the completeness of Tudor control over Welsh magnate power.
