The Battle

History & Significance

Athelstan completed the subjugation of Cornwall, fixing the River Tamar as the boundary between English and Cornish territory and expelling the Cornish from Exeter, which had had a mixed English-Cornish population. Earlier sources suggest Athelstan may have fought a battle in Cornwall. The Cornish kings were made to pay tribute and attend Athelstan court. This completed the western extension of English power that Alfred had begun.
