The Battle

History & Significance

The Anglo-Saxon Chronicle records that Ceawlin, who had been the most powerful English king and dominant force in southern Britain, fought at Fagadun and retreated in anger. This obscure battle may mark the beginning of Ceawlin's fall — he was expelled from Wessex shortly after. The location is debated, but some scholars place it in the Cheshire area near the Mercian-Welsh border.
