History & Significance

The Penrith muster brought the Lake Counties into the Pilgrimage of Grace. Cumberland and Westmorland had strong grievances over enclosures and dissolution. The Penrith assembly linked the northern pilgrims to the Yorkshire host via the Stainmore road. The region would rise again in Bigod's revolt three months later.
