Part of the long Forbes-Gordon feud. Lord Forbes was killed at Tillangus. The feud between the Protestant Forbes and Catholic Gordon clans in Aberdeenshire ran parallel to the national religious conflict and was exacerbated by it. The Gordon dominance of the north-east was repeatedly challenged by the Forbes clan throughout the Reformation period.
