History & Significance

Stainmore Pass between County Durham and Cumbria was the principal trans-Pennine route and a key strategic corridor. Cerialis advance through Stainmore in 71-72 AD connected the York garrison (Eboracum) with Carlisle (Luguvalium) and allowed Roman forces to operate in the whole of northern England. The fort at Bowes on the pass controlled this vital crossing.
