History & Significance

Shortly after surrendering, Royalists recaptured Pontefract Castle in a night escalade and held it through the Second Civil War. During this siege the garrison conducted a daring raid that led to the death of Parliamentary Colonel Rainsborough, a prominent Leveller leader — a controversial and politically significant killing. The castle held until the end of the Second Civil War.
