History & Significance

At the battle of the River Idle where Raedwald defeated Æthelfrith, Raedwald's son Rægenhere was also killed. The Chronicle and Bede record both the death of Æthelfrith and the fall of Rægenhere in this engagement. Rægenhere's death meant the restoration of Edwin came at a heavy price for the East Anglian royal house.
