History & Significance

The establishment of the fort at Corinium suppressed residual Dobunni resistance to direct Roman administration. The site grew into the second-largest city in Roman Britain. The road network radiating from Corinium — Ermin Street, Fosse Way, Akeman Street — cemented Roman control over the Cotswolds and upper Thames valley.
