Anarawd of Gwynedd, the most powerful Welsh king, submitted to Alfred in the mid-880s. Initially Anarawd had allied with Northumbrian Danes against Mercia, but Alfred diplomatic pressure and the Danish threat to Wales drove him into the West Saxon orbit. Asser records that Anarawd and his brothers sought Alfred protection. This Welsh alliance secured the western flank of the reconquest and provided Welsh forces for campaigns like Buttington in 893.
