History & Significance

Aethelred I of Northumbria was ruling when the Vikings sacked Lindisfarne in 793. The Northumbrian king could do nothing to prevent or punish the attack, demonstrating the vulnerability of coastal monasteries and the limitations of English naval power in the face of Viking mobility. Alcuin letters to Aethelred blamed Northumbrian sins for the disaster.
