History & Significance

Meldrum besieged Newark with a substantial Parliamentary force. Rupert made a rapid march from Oxford and caught Meldrum between his cavalry and the Newark garrison. Rather than fight, Meldrum surrendered his entire army on honourable terms, an embarrassing capitulation. Newark remained the key Royalist garrison on the Great North Road.
