The Battle

History & Significance

Welsh levies were forcibly raised across Wales for the Earl of Essex campaign in Ireland in 1599. The pressing of unwilling Welsh men for Irish service caused disorder in several Welsh counties. Armed confrontations between press gangs and Welsh men resisting impressment occurred in Montgomeryshire and Breconshire. The chaos of the Irish recruitment was one of the last major military disruptions to affect Wales under Elizabeth I.
