History & Significance

Ecgberht led his army to Dore (now a suburb of Sheffield) where the Northumbrians submitted to him without fighting. The submission at Dore is sometimes called the first moment when all England was under one ruler. Ecgberht did not attempt to permanently annex Northumbria but collected tribute and recognition.
