Seven weeks after Easter 878, Alfred emerged from Athelney and called the Somerset, Wiltshire, and part of the Hampshire fyrd to muster at Egbert Stone, identified as somewhere in east Somerset or west Wiltshire. The response showed the depth of support for Alfred even after Guthrum seizure of Wessex. The muster at Egbert Stone was the first step of the campaign that culminated at Edington and was as significant as the battle itself: without the assembled fyrd, there could have been no decisive engagement.
