History & Significance

Denbigh Castle — built by Henry de Lacy after Edward I's conquest — was held for the King by the formidable Colonel William Salesbury, nicknamed "Old Blue Stockings." He had successfully fought off the Battle of Denbigh Green in November 1645 where the Parliamentary cavalry routed the last Royalist relief force. The castle finally surrendered in October 1646 when all hope of relief was gone. Salesbury's defiance has made him one of the celebrated figures of Civil War Wales.
