In 937 a grand coalition assembled against Athelstan: Constantine II of Scotland, Owain of Strathclyde, and Olaf Guthfrithson with a Dublin Norse fleet united to challenge English supremacy. The three forces met and marched south, probably through the north-west, towards the Humber. The scale of the coalition — involving Gaelic Norse from Dublin, Scots, and Britons — shows how widely Athelstan dominance was resented. The campaign culminated in Brunanburh.
