History & Significance

John Graham of Claverhouse, later Viscount Dundee, conducted extensive operations against field conventicles in Galloway and Ayrshire in 1678 as part of the government campaign to suppress illegal Presbyterian worship. His dragoons dispersed numerous conventicles, arrested preachers and worshippers, levied fines and imposed military quartering on the region. The Galloway sweeps made Claverhouse both feared and hated in the southwest.
