History & Significance

In addition to Eamont Bridge, Welsh kings including Hywel Dda submitted to Athelstan at Hereford in 927 and were required to pay tribute. William of Malmesbury records the terms: annual tribute of 20 pounds of gold, 300 pounds of silver, 25,000 cattle, hounds, and hawks. Whether or not these figures are precise, they indicate the scale of English domination over Wales under Athelstan. Hywel Dda frequently attended Athelstan court as a sub-king.
