History & Significance

After the expulsion of Ecgberht, Ricsige was appointed as the new English Northumbrian king, still under Danish overlordship. His brief reign 872-876 represents the final attempt to maintain a viable English Northumbrian kingdom before the land was formally partitioned among Halfdan's men. Ricsige held court north of the Tyne while Danes controlled York.
